Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which a person, under medical supervision, breathes 100% pure oxygen inside a specially designed treatment chamber that is pressurized like being in deep sea. Normal air that we breathe has 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% carbon dioxide and other gases. Oxygen is normally bound to haemoglobin in the red blood cells and carried to various tissues through blood. Breathing 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure like in deep sea pressure causes oxygen to be dissolved in our blood plasma and increases its availability 5 to 10 times more than normal to our body's tissues.
